
Toyota has released a new short film starring its latest generation assistance robot which has just successfully completed its first real-world trial.
The new advanced HSR (Human Support Robot) is claimed to be just the beginning for Toyota's well-publicised foray into the world of robotics. Last year Toyota announced a billion-dollar investment in artificial intelligence and robotic research.
Former U.S. soldier Romulo Camargo, who suffered injuries in Afghanistan, is the video's focus as it documents how engineers adapted the HSR to his needs.
The HSR, initially resembled the robots used in vehicle manufacturing factories to laser spot-weld body panels but, according to Toyota, is far more sophisticated as it uses visual sensors and artificial intelligence to control its movement.
Controlled by Camargo - using voice controls, or a touchscreen tablet - the HSR can pick-up and fetch. His carers can also manually control the HSR.
As well as a folding arm, the HSR is equipped with a flexible hand with two 'fingers' so it can lift thin items such as cards or paper.
If asked to "bring the water bottle" the HSR uses its complex algorithms to search and find the water bottle and then plot the appropriate way to use its arm and hands to pick the item up.
On its journey to and from the water bottle, the HSR uses its visual sensors to safely navigate within the home and to avoid any new obstacles along the way.
The same robot can also initiate voice commands or phone calls with friends or family members and keep watch when the human carer is away from the house.
As well as command, the HSR can also take part in daily chores like opening the curtains, taking the trash out or answering the door to visitors.
