Watered-down 2025 MG7 approved for sale in Aus

Stinger-esque Chinese liftback won’t be packing all the ponies it could be

The 2025 MG7 sports sedan will be a whole lot milder than expected when it arrives in the coming months, with Australian versions set to make do with just 170kW despite coming with the full-sized 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

We say “just” because the inbound Camry rival is good for 192kW/405Nm in its native market; enough to see it launch from 0-100km/h in a claimed 6.5 seconds.

It’s unclear how quick the watered-down Aussie versions will be, but it would be fair to assume they won’t be as bigger threat to the Hyundai Sonata N-Line and Skoda Octavia RS as first thought.

MG Australia confirmed the MG7 fastback for our market last year but has thus far stopped short of confirming any details beyond the evaluation of all the turbo-petrol and hybrid versions.

Well now the wannabe sports sedan has been approved for sale in Australia and, according to certification documents obtained by carsales, will be offered here in two forms, each with a 170kW version of the premier 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

For reference, other markets have access to a 1.5-litre mill good for 138kW/300Nm.

The Australian 2.0-litre is almost certainly the same unit offered in the MG HS medium SUV overseas, meaning it supports its 170kW of power with 370Nm of torque and operates through a nine-speed automatic transmission – the latter detail confirmed by the homologation data.

All versions send power to the front wheels, the flagships with the help of an electronic limited-slip differential.

According to the local documentation, the MG7 will be offered in standard and ‘Lux’ forms – likely Excite and Essence respectively – and is technically classed as a hatchback with its liftback boot.

Both variants will ride on 19-inch alloy wheels shod with 245/40-profile rubber as standard, employ the same passive suspension set-up and share a beefy 321mm x 30mm front and 272mm x 10mm rear braking package.

An MG Australia spokesperson couldn’t confirm exactly when the MG7 would launch Down Under but indicated it would likely be in the third quarter of the year, with more information on the local vehicles due shortly.
