Webber 50:50 for Bathurst 12 Hour
Aussie superstar team may yet get a start, but not with “official” Porsche backingThe 2015 Bathurst 12 Hour could have a star-studded team as a key drawcard. But the team, which could include actor Eric Bana, Awesome Foursome rower James Tomkins and ex-F1 star Mark Webber is only “50:50 at best”.
That’s the estimation of Webber, who told motoring.com.au that Bathurst was “something he’d like to do”.
“I think it’s a 50/50 at best,” Webber opined when interviewed last week’s local launch of the all-new 911 Turbo and Turbo S.
“I know he [Eric Bana] likes his driving and yeah, so… [But] I’ve got some bigger priorities in the next few years, for sure.
“It’s more… We always chat and there’s always good friends and people, you know, that like this type of activity. So they always pick my brains about what we can do and how we can go about it… He’s a good lad and drives well. And so does James Tomkins,” Webber stated.
“So I know Bathurst [12 Hour] is, is something that I’d like to do but…” Webber hedged.
The last time Webber raced at the Bathurst was in a Formula Ford in the 1990s. Bana for his part raced in the 2014 event in a Lamborghini Gallardo but is a Porsche customer, having raced in local 911 series and other events.
Porsche Cars Australia Director Public Relations, Paul Ellis, was coy when quizzed but stated that it would be “very unlikely” an official PCA entry would front the starter in 2015.
“I haven’t seen an entry list for next year’s Bathurst. Not even sure there is one yet,” he stated when asked whether Webber would join Bana in the field.
“We always support our customers whenever they go racing but… Would there be an official Porsche Cars Australia factory entry into the 12-hour next year? That would be very unlikely,” Ellis stated.
