We’ve received ‘HELP!’ emails from parents who are expecting twins and others who will also soon have two infants under two years old, which has prompted them to start searching for a new family car.
Well, we’re here to help!
It will be a busy time, and you’re going to have your hands full, so it will be important that the car is very practical and easy to get two little ones in and out of the back seat easily and comfortably.
For transporting two infants, you’ll definitely need room for both their baby seats to be rear-facing in the back and to still have good legroom for the adults in the front.
Whether you are having twins or having your two babies close together, the easier cars are for you to reach in and get infants in and out of their child seats without having to crane your back the better.
Some cars have rear doors that open nice and wide so as the kids get older they’ll find it easier to get in and out of their seats and you’ll be able to reach in to them more comfortably too.
Boot space will need to accommodate a twin side-by-side or modular double pram too, with a bit of room for their nappy bag etc.
It may feel like you’ll be changing their nappies forever, but they’ll grow quicker than you can imagine so having a boot that could fit two scooters or two bikes or two of whatever their chosen instrument or hobby is will be great forward thinking to make the car more future-proof too.
Interior space is going to be of great importance. As the kids grow you’ll want a bit of space between them so they can’t provoke each other – and you’ll want a bit of much-needed personal space in the front too!
There are some great cars on the market that are fantastic for families with two children under two years old. I have tested hundreds of cars with my family over the past seven years as a mum of two, family car journalist and founder of BabyDrive.com.au, so here are my top picks…
The latest five-seater Nissan X-TRAIL has great legroom for your family needs. With rear-facing Infasecure baby seats installed in the back, a 182cm-tall driver or front passenger easily fits in the front.
The rear seats slide on a 60/40 split so you can distribute the legroom as you need to, making it a great SUV for families with twins or two infants. An extra bonus for families are the built-in window blinds in the rear windows of the Nissan X-TRAIL to shade your little passengers from the sun while driving.
The doors of the Nissan X-TRAIL open nice and wide, making installing baby seats and reaching in and out of the back comfortable for parents. The boot space is very large and practical for families; a twin pram fits nicely with room still for your weekly grocery shop, or your family fur baby can travel in the boot too.
The Skoda Superb five-seater family wagon is another car that’s hard to beat when it comes to interior space and legroom. With two rear-facing child seats installed in the back, a 186cm-tall driver or front passenger easily fits in the front seats.
As well as very comfortably accommodating two baby seats in the back, the Skoda Superb has lots of features throughout that can make life a little easier for families. Think rear window shades, iPad holders, hidden storage areas, a sash under the roller blind in the boot for your kids’ balls etc.
Being a wagon, the boot space is very generous too, and easily fits a twin pram and a week’s groceries beside it.
A very affordable and practical five-seater SUV, the GWM Haval H6 is a great all-rounder for families looking to fit two children under two in the back.
Interior space is comfortable and legroom is very good for taller passengers (or just to give the rest of us a bit of personal space)! A 186cm-tall driver can fit in front of a rear-facing Infasecure Attain More baby seat and someone even taller could do the same on the passenger side.
Doorways open wide and the H6 sits quite high so it’s not back-breaking when bending in and out of the back. Boot space is excellent in the Haval H6, and a twin or double pram fits with room beside it for nappy bags and grocery shopping.
The battery-electric Hyundai IONIQ 6 has oodles and oodles of legroom! Its comfortable and spacious interior will easily hold two Infasecure baby seats in the back, with plenty of room for tall passengers in the front.
With a battery range of more than 600km, the IONIQ 6 is a practical EV for weekly family life as you won’t need to be charging it every day on top of having your hands full with two infants, as well as being a practical distance between charging stops for holidays and road trips.
This is a rather different-shaped car, affectionately named ‘Banana Shark’ by my kids. Being a sleek sedan, it has a lower roofline than most SUVs but doesn’t feel too low to bend in and out of the back for putting kids in their baby seats.
Boot space is equally generous in the IONIQ 6 EV and a double pram fits with room beside it for scooters or toys when they are older or a weekly shop, although the opening is not quite as large as you would get in an SUV or hatchback-type car such as its IONIQ 5 sister model, which is also super-roomy.
A household plug socket in the rear footwell means that once you have driven your cherubs to sleep you can plug in your laptop and, if you’re not working, have a well-deserved rest and catch up on your favourite show!
It’s officially categorised as a large SUV, but the Subaru Outback is really more of a practical five-seater wagon that is deservedly popular among families with two infants under two in the back.
The interior space is good with plenty of legroom for 182cm-tall passengers in front of two rear-facing Infasecure baby seats. The doors open nice and wide, so getting kids in and out isn’t difficult.
Boot space is very good being a wagon and a twin or double pram fits easily, with plenty of room aside for the weekly shop too.
Highly rated as carsales’ Best Mid-Size SUV in recent years , the Kia Sportage is a comfortable vehicle for families wanting to fit two rear-facing child seats or infant capsules, with enough legroom for 180cm-plus front occupants.
This is a great option for families that don’t need acres legroom but is still very spacious and will really come into its own as your children grow.
Practical family features throughout the Kia Sportage include iPad holders in the back of the front head restraints and USB-C sockets on the back of the front seats, which are all great for when the kids are a few years older and watching cartoons on car journeys. (I know you may think you’ll never do that but after years of screaming and squabbling in the back you will welcome the quiet it brings.)
The Sportage also has bag hooks on the back of the front seats, which are great for daycare or school backpacks, while boot space is good and a twin or double pram fit nicely along with a few bags of shopping.
