Want to do the big lap of Australia, but only have four-week's annual leave to do it? Or just looking to limit the number of ‘Are we there yet?’ moans from the kids in the back during the next family holiday?
German suspension specialist Goldschmitt has come up with one, licence-busting solution with a motorhome guaranteed to get you to your overnight campsite well before sunset. In fact, it's so fast it currently holds the world land speed record for motorhomes of 222km/h. The time set beat the previous record of 207km/h, set by a Hymer motorhome also tweaked by Goldschmitt.
Based on a Mercedes Viano commercial van similar to the one pictured, the Westfalia Special Edition 'Jules Verne' motorhome is equipped with a humble, 2.2 litre diesel engine and six-speed manual transmission. Although the engine and chassis were tuned for greater performance, the rest of the van was left as standard to comply with normal road regulations.
And unlike some previous land speed records, the motorhome was not gutted inside to save weight. Instead it remained fully set-up for camping, including a pop-top roof for extra headroom. We can't verify if any wet towels were hanging off the railing at the back of the van during the record run though!
The world's fastest motorhome, together with its land speed record certificate, was recently on display at the world’s largest caravan show, the 2012 Caravan in Dusseldorf, Germany.
