WORTHERSEE 2018: VW apprentices create two Golf concepts
GTI hatch and Golf wagon get heavily customised for Austrian fan meetVolkswagen has released pictures of two new concepts it has unveiled at the annual Worthersee festival. Both concepts have been created by the German marque's apprentices.
The first model, called the Golf GTI Next Level, features a stylish body kit and striking forked arrow stickers.
Created by students from the car maker's Wolfsburg training centre, the highlights of the modified GTI include incorporating adjustable Bilstein coil-over suspension and a set of 20-inch alloy rims from the Audi R8.
Under the bonnet, the regular car's turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder carries over but, thanks to a stainless-steel exhaust and a larger intercooler, the GTI Next Level produces 302kW.
Combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, sadly, no performance figures have been released for, what must be, the fastest Golf GTI ever.
Inside, a huge sound system lives where the rear seats used to occupy that uses 3-D printed parts for the mounts and side trims.
An electric powered opening cargo floor, retractable LED monitors and LED underfloor lighting complete the updates.
The second model designed and built by students for Volkswagen's eastern Germany Zwickau campus is based on the Golf wagon.
Called the Golf Variant TGI GMOTION, the second concept is claimed to have created a sporty wagon that has some off-road capability, the students painted their car in colours normally reserved for Bentley owners.
Powered by natural gas, the small 96kW 1.5-litre turbo engine is, again, combined with the firm's seven-speed dual-clutch auto but this time gets all-wheel drive.
Like the GTI, the wagon also gets a coil-over suspension that allows the ride to be lowered by up to 40mm.
Featuring a upgraded 4-piston brake system, the biggest challenge facing the students was adapting the underbody of the small Golf wagon for the extra all-wheel drive hardware.
Inside, the sport seats feature red stitched with plenty of 'GMOTION' logos.
In total, the two Golfs were created in nine months by 29 apprentices.
