WORTHERSEE: VW Golf Variant Youngster 5000
VW apprentices create what looks to be the ultimate street sleeper. Is this a sneak peek at an upcoming Golf GTI wagon?The VW Golf GTI Wolfsburg Edition wasn’t the only creation turned out by the company’s up-and-coming tech-heads. Also starring at the Worthersee Tour was the Golf Variant Youngster 5000 -- the handiwork of six apprentices from the company’s Zwickau plant.
Using the latest generation of the Golf Variant (read: wagon) as a starting point, the six youngsters slotted in a 2.0-litre turbo engine sourced from a GTI with the Performance Package, but took the step of uprating it to a Golf R-bashing 239kW.
Helping keep the grunt in check, they also installed an adjustable Bilstein suspension set-up that can be controlled via an iPhone. External tweaks are relatively low-key, but keen trainspotters will pick up on the Golf R front and rear bumpers and side sills. The whole lot was then coated in Arancio Argos pearl paintwork, contrasting nicely with the multispoke gloss-black rims.
In case you’re wondering about the moniker, it stems from the 5000-watt iPad-controlled sound system that’s mounted on skids in the rear of the vehicle.
Seems to us there would be plenty of takers if they put this family-friendly tearaway into production. What say you?
