The Zeekr 7X will arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2025 and is expected to quickly become the brand’s best-selling vehicle.
Expected to be priced around $70,000, it will cross swords with the facelifted 2025 Tesla Model Y, which is priced between roughly $60K and $70K at present, along with more expensive SUVs like the BMX iX3 and Polestar 4, among others.
The Zeekr 7X features air suspension, a luxury cabin fit-out and a striking LED lighting system in its front bumper that can feature customisable messaging, although whether the latter complies with design regulations in Australia remains unclear.
Speaking at the Everything Electric show in Sydney recently, Zeekr’s global marketing boss Frank Li told carsales the 7X is a pivotal vehicle in the brand’s growing catalogue.
“So this year we currently only have two models, X and 009, and 7X will come in late this year,” said Li. “So for this year, our target is trying to reach 3000 [sales]. And for next year, we’re targeting 10,000 because next year we will have a full year of these three models.”
The 7X is positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y – currently Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle – and is expected to significantly boost Zeekr’s market presence.
“We strongly believe that 7X will bring a lot of volume for us,” said Li.
While exact pricing for the 7X hasn’t been finalised, Zeekr’s global marketing chief indicated the vehicle would likely command a modest premium over its key rival.
“This [price] hasn’t been decided yet,” he said. “It’s going to arrive in Australia I think probably Q3. So we may launch this product around July or August [to the media] before they arrive [for customer deliveries]. So at that time price will be finalised.”
When asked if the 7X would undercut the Tesla Model Y on price, Li was pragmatic. “I think globally, the price positioning will be a little bit higher than Model Y. But it depends how things are going until that time. Because, you know, Model Y prices go up and down.”
Zeekr is justifying its pricing strategy by offering a more comprehensively equipped vehicle than its competitors.
“So actually, for this one, every feature is higher than Model Y – with ADAS [Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems], with air suspension, with seat ventilation, it’s almost everything,” said Li. “The light bar on the front, you can code whatever you want.”
The premium positioning could work in Zeekr’s favour as Australian EV buyers are increasingly prioritising features and technology over pure affordability. Entry-level sub-$30,000 EVs from the likes of GWM and BYD haven’t exploded in popularity, while EVs in the $40,000 to $60,000 price bracket currently appear to represent the sweet spot.
Zeekr plans to open additional dealerships across major Australian cities ahead of the 7X launch with customer deliveries expected to begin in September 2025.
