Frequently offered in high-performance versions as well, these cars are long-wheelbase ('limousine') models providing more legroom in the rear seat and a comprehensive specification that includes advanced infotainment systems, sophisticated driver-assist technology and multi-faceted seating and climate control functions individualised for all passengers and the driver. The starting price for cars like this usually exceeds $100,000, and can be up to $300,000 or more, depending on brand and trim level.

1. Peugeot 5008
The very first Peugeot 5008 was launched in 2009, and looked more people mover than SUV. Today, in its second-generation form, the seven-seat 5008 is offered in two trim grades - GT Line and GT - powered by a 121kW 1.6-litre turbo petrol and a 131kW 2.0-litre turbo diesel, respectively. Available in automatic only, it's classed as a medium SUV, rivalling models such as the Citroen C5 Aircross, Nissan X-TRAIL and Skoda Karoq. Peugeot 5008 SUVs are sold today with a host of safety and tech equipment as standard.

The Swedish manufacturer's largest SUV offering, the Volvo XC90 was first launched in 2002. Available with both petrol and diesel engine options, the XC90 can be had with either five or seven seats and in front- or all-wheel drive layouts. It's also the first model to be manufactured in China, after Geely took over the company in 2010. Today, the Volvo XC90 is offered in three trim levels, all with four-cylinder engines including turbocharged and supercharged options. The XC90 T8 R-Design is now the range-topping variant, offering up 235kW/400Nm from its hybrid powertrain.

Taking its cues from the S-Class luxury limo, the very large GL SUV became the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class in 2016. The name change was accompanied by a minor upgrade for the American-built SUV. In Australia the importer offers the GLS in two variants, one petrol, the other diesel. The lower priced petrol model is the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, with a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder, and the diesel is the Mercedes-Benz GLS 400 d - also powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine. Both variants are four-wheel drives and the range will expand with the launch of the V8-engined Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 late in 2020.
