Large Luxury Cars

Large luxury cars are mostly prestige cars, following the demise of locally-manufactured cars like the Holden Calais and the Ford Falcon G6E. These vehicles are usually sedans or occasionally wagons, and with some exceptions tend to be rear-wheel drives. They seat five, but four is the optimal number for peak comfort. To be considered true luxury cars, they should feature three climate control zones, an audio system with more than six speakers and seat heating in the front.

1. Audi Q8

It may sound like a middle-eastern country, but the Audi Q8 is actually a style-driven large luxury SUV with five seats and more lighting, chassis, engine and infotainment technology than any other SUV from Audi. The ultimate ego trip, the Audi Q8 has loads of cool 'easter eggs' and a range of highly-refined and sophisticated petrol and diesel powertrains. First launched in 2018, the Audi Q8 is still a youngster in automotive terms and is priced between roughly $130,000 and $166,000. Taking on the BMW X6, which started the 'coupe-like' SUV sub-segment, the big Audi is one of the most stylish large SUVs on the market.

2. Infiniti QX70

The Infiniti QX70 is a large, five-seat premium SUV that delivers high levels of luxury and generous cargo space. Despite its dated design and mechanical packaging, the Infiniti QX70 was the brand's third-best-selling vehicle in Australia, due primarily to its large size, ample interior space and the availability of a 5.0-litre V8 engine. With the muscular V8 engine (287kW/500Nm) and price range between $76,000 and $105,000 - undercutting rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5 and Audi Q7 by a massive margin - the Infiniti QX70 should have been a smash hit but like so many of its cars, buyers simply wanted a German badge, not an unknown, odd-sounding Japanese one.

3. Jaguar I-PACE

One of the world's first fully-fledged electric vehicles (EV) from a mainstream manufacturer, the Jaguar I-PACE put the British brand on the EV map when it launched in 2018. A year later it won the 2019 World Car of the Year award thanks to its generous range of around 400km per charge, a reasonably practical but luxurious interior and sporty driving dynamics. The Jaguar I-PACE has been a critical success but like so many EVs in Australia - the Tesla Model 3 an exception - only a handful have been sold, largely due to the high asking price of around $124,000. Launched in 2018, the Jaguar I-PACE has a theoretical range of almost 500km but real-world testing puts that closer to 400km.
