Small Off Road Cars
Small off-road vehicles are a subset of small SUVs. The most prominent example of this type of vehicle is the Suzuki Jimny, but Daihatsu also once sold vehicles in this category, although that brand hasn't operated in Australia since 2005. To be judged an off-road machine, a small SUV has to have good approach and departure angles, a short wheelbase and high ground clearance. Ideally, it should also be a part-time 4WD, fitted with a dual-range transmission.

1. Suzuki Jimny
The Suzuki Jimny needs no introduction as one of the world's most clickable cars. With almost three million Jimnys sold since it was launched in 1970, it has achieved cult status as a bona fide 4x4; it's light weight and live axle setup allow the Jimny to tackle off-road tracks that some LandCruisers wouldn't dare. The modern-day Suzuki Jimny exemplifies low-key attention-seeking, its tiny size juxtaposed with a tough retro design. It has been criticised for its lack of safety features but is one of the most sought-after vehicles in Australia, with stock consistently selling out.

Ultimately an Impreza with extra ride height and plastic wheel arches, the Subaru XV is classed as a compact SUV - although some prefer to call it a crossover, as it isn't quite butch enough to be a fully-fledged SUV. Sold as the Subaru Crosstrek overseas, the XV was introduced to Australia in 2012. Like its Forester sibling, the XV is good for light off-roading, and comes with a decent level of standard equipment and five-star safety. As of 2020, a Hybrid-powered Subaru XV is also available in the range.
