Midsize SUVs

Midsize or medium SUVs are practical family cars that roughly measure between 4.5 and 4.8 metres in length. They can tow small trailers and light caravans. Some will seat up to seven. More affordable variants are front-wheel drives; upmarket models feature all-wheel drive. Off-road ability varies considerably across the spectrum, but most medium SUVs will rarely leave the bitumen.

1. Toyota RAV4

Launched in Australia during 1994, the Toyota RAV4 is a well established model name that has, nonetheless, evolved considerably from its conception. Originally a boutique styling exercise based on soft-road mechanicals and platform, the RAV4 quickly became a capable off-roader, underpinning Toyota's broader SUV range in Australia. The SUV has also grown drastically over time, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 five-door model nearly a metre longer than the first three-door model from 26 years ago. That first generation of Toyota RAV4 would have been a small SUV today, but the 2020 model is very definitely a medium SUV in VFACTS parlance.

2. Kia Sportage

Another bearer of the Peter Schreyer design stamp, the Kia Sportage fits nicely into the highly-active, five-passenger mid-size SUV segment. Originally a nondescript dual-range, off-road compact 4WD that first appeared in 1996, the Kia Sportage over four generations has become a stylish, practical, capable and accommodating competitor for Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and Nissan X-Trail. Typical of the genre, it offers a choice between front-drive and AWD, and petrol or turbo-diesel power. The Kia Sportage also benefits dynamically from Australian input into the suspension tuning.

3. Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 was a smash hit from the moment the mid-size SUV was launched in 2012, and the second generation of Mazda CX-5 has continued that trend since 2017. Once Australia's top-selling SUV, the CX-5 outsold the Mazda3 to become the Japanese's brand's best-seller in Australia in 2019, and continues to sell up a storm despite fierce competition in the nation's biggest SUV segment by the likes of Toyota's RAV4 and the Hyundai Tucson. Like the smaller CX-30, there are 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engines matched to both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive and manual and automatic transmissions, but the Mazda CX-5 also adds diesel power to its comprehensive model line-up.
