Dual cab Utes
Dual-cab utes can seat up to five passengers (including the driver) over two rows of seating. Their load-carrying volume is compromised by the shorter length from the rear of the cab to the rear axle, but they are highly popular with families needing a workhorse during the week and a family wagon at weekends.

1. Ford Ranger
The Ranger is Ford Australia's showroom darling, having commanded the lion's share of blue oval sales since the closure of Ford's local manufacturing operations in 2015. The dominance of the Ford Ranger should be of little surprise, since it was designed and engineered at Ford's Victorian global engineering outpost. The current model has been on sale since 2011 and last underwent a facelift in 2015. There are three body styles - Single cab, Super Cab and Double Cab - and as ever the Ranger is sold with a choice of 3.2-litre turbo-diesel five-cylinder and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrains, the latter installed in the flagship Ranger Raptor. A new Ford Ranger is due out in 2022.

The Isuzu D-MAX first sold here in 2008, when the Japanese brand launched its light commercial vehicle brand in Australia, but it was basically a rebadged version of the Rodeo ute previously imported by Holden. Despite Holden launching its Colorado pick-up in competition, the Isuzu D-MAX has become increasingly popular with Aussie ute buyers, thanks to its lusty 3.0-litre turbo-diesel, no-frills capability, strong value proposition and a full range of drivetrain and body style options. The original D-MAX became one of Australia's five best-selling utes before it was replaced in mid-2020 by an all-new model bringing significant improvements to design, technology, safety and refinement.

Since the second-generation model released in 2011, the Mazda BT-50 has been based on the Ford Ranger. Sharing the Ford's Australian designed, engineered and developed 'T6' platform, Mazda's trusty ute wears unique bodywork available in single-cab, Freestyle (extra-cab) and dual-cab configurations, with 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains and 2.2- and 3.2-litre diesel engines. The current Mazda BT-50 hasn't kept pace with the Ford Ranger's most recent safety and powertrain upgrades and has no answer for the Raptor, but from 2021 the Mazda BT-50 is based on the all-new Isuzu D-MAX.
