Pricing and specifications have been revealed for the new BMW X2, which arrives in Australian showrooms from March.
The German car-maker’s latest high-riding crossover will start from $55,900 plus on-road costs and will be available solely with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine from launch.
Offering up 141kW and 280Nm, the sDrive20i brings a 0-100km/h time of 7.7 seconds. It will send drive through the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
In due course, BMW Australia will offer further engine variants including diesel and three-cylinder powertrains, many mated with the brand’s more familiar eight-speed auto and with a choice of front-drive and all-wheel drive.
Based on the existing X1, the X2 brings styling changes including a more sporty interpretation of the marque’s kidney grille, a return to the C-pillar BMW badge familiar with the legendary E9 coupe from the late 1960s and an athletic profile completed by dual exhaust outlets and L-shaped LED tail-lights.
Proportionally, the X2 is shorter, wider and lower than the X1 – at 4360mm long, 1824mm wide and 1526mm high – however, it retains the same 2670mm wheelbase.
The cabin features a driver-oriented layout finished with cloth seat trim as standard, interior lighting and BMW’s latest infotainment system, iDrive6. A 6.5-inch centre screen is matched by a 5.7-inch display in the driver’s instrument cluster.
A 470-litre cargo space resides at the rear, offering up to 1355 litres with the split/folding rear seats stowed.
Standard provisions on the X2 include 19-inch alloy wheels, M Sport suspension, M rear spoiler, LED headlights with cornering function, LED fog lights, automatic tailgate, M leather steering wheel, front sports seats, climate control, auto-dimming rear view mirror, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera and sat-nav.
On the safety front the X2 gets automated emergency braking, lane departure warning and forward collision warning.
The X2’s $55,900 starting price represents a circa $10,000 premium over the entry price of the X1. Compared with the sDrive20i version of the X1, the premium sits closer to $1500.
As is customary with most European marques, there is no shortage of option packages. The $2600 Innovations packages adds head-up display, active cruise control and concierge services, the $2700 Comfort Package brings comfort access and electric seat adjustment with seat heaters, and the $3300 Style Plus Package adds 20-inch alloys, metallic paintwork and a panoramic sunroof.
