BMW has begun a teaser campaign for its all-new X2 compact SUV, which is set to rival the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Range Rover Evoque.
Created to be a more stylish version of the current X1, the X2 has already been shown in near-production form — at the Paris motor show last September — and also been leaked by a Japanese patent.
The showroom-ready X2 isn't as extreme as the original concept and the new teaser shows it loses the show car's more imposing kidney grille and ultra-slim front and rear lights.
Based on the same UKL platform as the X1, the latest BMW SUV will be available with both front-wheel drive or AWD.
In most markets the X2 will be sold with a range of three- and four-cylinder petrol engines, but Australians should get the choice of 2.0-litre turbo petrol and diesel fours combined with an eight-speed automatic.
In the future, the X2 is rumoured to get the M Performance treatment including a 224kW powerplant.
BMW is excited by the prospect of the all-new X2 in SUV-hungry Australia, where it should slot between the X1 (priced from ($50,600) and X3 (from $63,800).
We expect more teases for the X2 ahead of its launch at the Frankfurt motor show next month.
