2018 Jeep Wrangler revealed

Same, but different – small changes amount to increasingly gentrified US off-roader

This is the 2018 Jeep Wrangler.

The US car-maker has revealed the latest iteration of its cult off-roader, headlined by evolutionary design changes, improved aerodynamics and an improved range of engines.

All is to be revealed at the Los Angeles motor show in a few weeks’ time, Jeep says, but until then, we know the Wrangler moves forward with a slightly more gentrified bent. In other words, it’s less boxy.

Jeep’s ubiquitous seven-slat vertical grille is present and correct and there are some modern design flourishes, including LED headlights and modernised proportions.

Touted as “the most capable SUV ever”, the Wrangler promises advanced fuel-efficient powertrains, more open-air options, more safety features and more technology. A new aluminium-intensive design is set to shed weight, as noted in recent spy photos.

In addition, Jeep will use the Wrangler to underpin a new utility called the Scrambler, set for release in 2019.

The Wrangler is set to conform with modern tastes thanks to the option of a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, called Hurricane, along with a selection of both the familiar Pentastar V6 – teamed with an eight-speed auto – and a new 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel.

On top of these, a hybrid option is also being mooted, while it is certain Jeep will maintain the availability of a six-speed manual gearbox.

All will be revealed at the LA motor show from November 27, before the Wrangler's Australian arrival in late 2018.
