New Audi A1 officially revealed

Audi has officially sent its smallest hatchback -- the diminutive A1 Sportback -- upsize and upmarket, unveiling a second-generation model that will arrive in Australian showrooms in the first half of 2019.

Following a drawn-out build-up, we can report the 2019 Audi A1 Sportback is 56mm longer than its predecessor, at 4.03 metres. Width is largely carryover at 1.74 metres.

Beneath the skin Audi’s smallest model will sit on the Volkswagen Group’s latest MQB AO platform, which already underpins the latest Volkswagen Polo.

The bigger dimensions have liberated more space throughout the nippy hatchback's five-seat cabin and in a 335-litre boot (up 65 litres) that expands to 1090 litres with the second-row backrests folded flat.

Along with more space, the 2019 edition will feature more technology, with Audi confirming installation of its ubiquitous 10.25-inch 'virtual cockpit' instrument display that already takes place in models ranging from the A4 to the R8 supercar.

The display is accompanied by a new multi-function steering wheel and a centrally-positioned 10.1-inch display screen that now uses touch inputs for navigating functions including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Voice functionality is also included.

The A1 also sports wireless phone charging and will be optionally available with an 11-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

On the safety front, Audi says the 2019 A1 will offer new driver assistance functions including lane-departure warning, automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Automatic parking will also join the broadened tech arsenal.

Customisation will remain a key part of the game, too, thanks to 10 different exterior finishes and contrasting highlights available across the roof, mirrors, front spoiler and side sills.

The interior will be likewise a place for customisation, offered in different packages depending on whether buyers opted for either the basic, advanced or S Line spec.

Under the bonnet, the A1 will be available globally with a choice of three engines.

A 1.0-litre turbo-three offers up 70kW of power, while the top-spec four-cylinder pumps out 147kW.

All engines are expected to come with the option of a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

There is no word yet on whether Audi will follow up on the sportier first-generation S1 released in Australia in 2014.
