BMW has unveiled the latest antidote to the SUV – its new 3 Series Touring.
The evergreen wagon version of the all-new 3 Series has been unveiled in Europe and has been slated for Australian delivery in late 2019.
Suitably, the changes are quite extensive, heralded by larger dimensions (+76mm in length, +16mm in width and +8mm in height) inside and out, improved dynamics and new styling, safety and technology.
Physically, the 'G21' 3 Series Touring sits on a 41mm longer wheelbase than before, broader front (+43mm) and rear (+21mm) tracks.
The practicality stakes have improved moderately as a result, thanks to a 5-litre extension in luggage space – the boot now measuring 500 litres in regular guise, 1610 litres overall – and a load area that is 112mm wider and easier to access than before.
The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats are now electrically-adjusted, as is the tailgate, while the rear window now features electric adjustment.
Likewise, the car’s on-road comfort and performance credentials have been purportedly improved, sitting on the same lift-related dampers as the sedan and boasting 25 per cent better body stiffness.
From a styling perspective, the Touring bears familiar head lights and linked kidney grille, and familiar taillights. From the b-pillar back, the new wagon appears to sport a slightly more raked design than before.
Six engines will be available in Europe – three petrol and three diesel. Australia will take the 190kW/400Nm 330i petrol as its starting point, heading upwards to sportier variants including the all-wheel drive xDrive 340i Touring.
As before, BMW will offer the 3 Series Touring as an M Sport package, bringing a 10mm reduction in ride height, adaptive M suspension and electronically-controlled dampers.
The Touring gets familiar dashboard treatment as the sedan, comprising a new centre screen projecting the latest infotainment software, digital instrument cluster and improved voice activation.
Redesigned seats intend to enhance the Touring's long journey amenity, complemented by more shoulder and headroom. There are now provisions for three child seats across the rear, two of them ISOFIX.
Safety systems will also be strong, should the 3 Series sedan be any guide. Expect the latest acronyms, driver aids and full airbag coverage.
BMW Australia will released local pricing and specifications closer to the Touring’s launch around October.
