The wraps have come off a sportier version of the Subaru BRZ coupe in Japan, an Australian equivalent for which now appears certain to emerge later this year.
Much like the 2023 Subaru BRZ tS unveiled in the US in July, the new 2024 Subaru BRZ STI Sport revealed at the Fuji Speedway on the weekend features Brembo brakes with gold callipers at all four wheels, plus sportier suspension and 18-inch wheels with stickier rubber.
Those changes are accompanied by mild exterior cosmetic tweaks, plus BRZ STI Sport seats and interior accents.
There are no upgrades for the 174kW/250Nm 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder boxer engine – the same as the one employed in the twin-under-the-skin Toyota GR 86.
The new 2024 Subaru BRZ STI Sport is said to be a Japan-specific model, however, Subaru Australia is leaving the door open for an equivalent version to be released Down Under as soon as late this year.
“The BRZ STI Sport is a JDM model so no specific news to share on that particular car, however, stay tuned as we’ll have more to share on 2024 Aussie spec very soon,” a Subaru Australia spokesperson told carsales.
A sportier BRZ for Australia seems a fait accompli given the existence of the previous Subaru BRZ tS sold here between 2017 and 2021.
In any case, the 2024 Subaru BRZ promises to be safer than before across all variants, with Subaru Australia already confirming its Eyesight safety suite – including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) – will be extended to manual variants, having only been rolled out in automatic grades so far.
“We’ve confirmed that Eyesight is going to be available for manual transmission BRZ in 2024, so that is happening. More information around that is coming closer to the reveal of specification and pricing,” the Subaru Australia spokesperson said.
The new safety gear is expected to push the BRZ well clear of its current $40,290 plus on-road costs starting price, with similar changes expected to be implemented within the local WRX portfolio in the near future.
