2025 Mazda CX-80 gets five-star ANCAP rating

Latest seven-seat family-friendly Mazda SUV gets full marks in safety tests

The 2025 Mazda CX-80 has scored the full five stars for safety in the latest round of Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) crash testing.

The five-star rating awarded by ANCAP is said to apply to both the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions of the new Mazda CX-80, which were built from July 2024.

Delivering a strong 92 per cent result for adult occupant protection, the CX-80 was said to have received maximum points for side impact, oblique pole, whiplash protection and far-side impact tests.

The positive news for safety-obsessed buyers continued following front offset impact tests, where the three-row SUV put in yet another strong performance, while protection for both the driver and rear occupant were rated as ‘good’.

Full points were also awarded for protection of all body regions except the driver’s chest, where protection was only judged ‘adequate’.

The CX-80 also didn’t neglect child occupant protection, where is scored 87 per cent, while good levels of protection were awarded for all key body regions of the child dummies used in both the frontal offset and side-impact tests.

Even in pedestrian impact tests the Mazda still scored well, receiving an 84 per cent rating for protection of the pelvis, femur, and lower legs.

The autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, meanwhile, was said to have consistently performed effectively in forward-collision scenarios, the vehicle successfully dodging or mitigating impacts.

One weak area that needs to be addressed among the CX-80’s sophisticated driver aids is detecting crossing cyclists when turning left, with ANCAP tests scoring the Mazda seven-seat SUV as ‘poor’.

Testers were also less than impressed when you substituted cyclists for a motorbike, which resulted in another ‘poor’ verdict.

Clawing back an advantage, the Mazda’s lane-keep assist system delivered a decent ‘good’ rating, with full points scored.

“The Mazda CX-80 demonstrates a high level of standard safety, making it a reliable choice for families,” said ANCAP CEO, Carla Hoorweg.

The CX-80’s full five stars for protection wasn’t unexpected after the mechanically similar CX-60 was awarded full marks back in 2023.

The new wide-body CX-70 and CX-90 have yet to receive an ANCAP rating but the CX-80’s direct rival, the Hyundai Santa Fe, recently scored the full five stars.
