Australia’s lean ranks of family people-mover choice will be boosted early next year when the new-generation 2025 Volkswagen Multivan launches.
Arriving some three years late due to various issues production hold-ups, the T7 Euro Kia Carnival fighter is a fundamental change from the old Multivan 6.1, thanks primarily to its switch to the modular MQB platform – the same one underpinning the latest VW Golf and Tiguan.
The latest Multivan also has no technical dependence on the new Transporter T7 and its Caravelle bus spin-off, which are now clones of the Ford Transit.
The new Multivan is expected to launch in Australia in entry-level Life specification by April 2025, with a higher-spec Style model to follow in Q3.
Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but there is no doubting the top-selling Carnival is a key target.
“We will directly target flagship versions of the top selling seven-seaters in the Australian market with this highly specified, engineering high watermark,” VW Commercial Vehicles product and marketing boss Michelle Rowney said.
The Carnival line-up currently tops out at $72,910 plus on-road costs for the diesel GT-Line, whereas the outbound Multivan 6.1 line-up starts at $69,290 plus on-roads – graphing a starting price in low $70k range for the new model.
The Life will be powered by a 110kW/360Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine with the Style primed to adopt either a higher-output diesel or a turbo-petrol-electric plug-in hybrid system.
Two body lengths either side of 5.0 metres will be offered here, both featuring a highly-flexible three-row interior ranging from two to seven seats.
Access to the second and third rows will be via power sliding doors and a powered tailgate.
Said interior includes power adjustable lumbar support for the front seats, folding tables on the front seat backrests, removable and repositionable second row armrests and under-seat drawers.
Boot space is rated at 469 litres of space with all seven seats upright but expands to a gargantuan 3672 litres with only the front seats in play.
Headline equipment on the Life comprises keyless entry and start, tri-zone climate control, digital cockpit, a 10-inch infotainment system, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an eight-speaker sound system, and six USB-C ports.
Standard safety gear meantime includes seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking with turn assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring and keeping, side wind assist, blind spot monitoring, rear traffic alert, automatic LED headlights and park assist.
The new Multivan will join the smaller Caddy Maxi Life and electric ID.Buzz in VW’s people-mover line-up when it arrives next year.
