AIMS debut for FJ Cruiser

Toyota's retro-style offroader will be launched in Sydney ahead of an on-sale date in the first quarter of 2011

Toyota's colourful homage to the original FJ40 LandCruiser will go on sale in Australia early next year, following a public debut at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney during October.

"FJ Cruiser has loads of character that isn't found in any other SUV, let alone one that is built for off-road terrain," said Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner.

"It will be a lot of fun to own and drive, satisfying those who want a modern vehicle with the boulder-crawling spirit of Toyota's legendary off-roaders."

The FJ Cruiser, as the Prado-based vehicle is known, has already been on sale in the USA for some time. Like the recently-released Rukus, the FJ Cruiser provides Toyota with a model that attracts attention to the brand for something other than the usual brand traits, although the company points to the FJ Cruiser's strong performance in the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Initial Quality Study as evidence that it is built to a quality standard. Australian-delivered models will be built in Japan.

Selling the FJ Cruiser alongside the Rukus and the FT-86 sports car are hoped to lift the image of Toyota's brand from that of a company purveying honest, reliable transport to one that can provide cars with more pizzaz.
