Toyota will make a splash at next month's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, introducing the new generation Corolla to the public just days before the car goes on sale.
Sourced from Japan for the local market, the new Corolla has gained from significant market feedback in Europe, where the Corolla hatch is known as the Auris. The new model – the 11th generation of car to wear the Corolla badge – is lighter and more aerodynamic than the car it succeeds, with new electrically-assisted power steering enhancing the car's fuel efficiency.
In addition to being lighter, the new Corolla's body is also stronger and the car offers improved dynamics as a consequence of rejigged MacPherson struts at the front and the more direct ratio of the new steering system. Toyota claims that the lighter body has lowered the centre of gravity, which also aids stability and cornering prowess. Ride comfort has been fine-tuned also, with new spring and damper settings.
Toyota is revealing little about specification at this stage, but as we reported last month the new Corolla will join the market with the option of a continuously variable transmission, in lieu of the current car's dated four-speed automatic. The new car's interior is said to have achieved a higher quality standard and equipment is boosted. Added sound-deadening insulation has reduced the influx of engine and road noise, according to the company's press release, and the cabin is more spacious than before. While the new car is yet to be tested by NCAP, Toyota is expecting a five-star result once the Corolla undergoes the crash safety test. Toyota dealers will begin retailing the new Corolla from October 22.
