All-new 2024 Polestar 4 SUV now on sale

Order book opens for Polestar’s all-electric mid-size SUV, taking the fight up to Tesla Model Y

Australian buyers can now order the all-new 2024 Polestar 4 via the fast-growing EV brand’s online configurator, coinciding with the release of full local pricing and specifications for the all-important battery-electric premium mid-size SUV.

Only the second model line in the Swedish-Chinese brand’s Aussie portfolio next to the Polestar 2 sedan, the five-seater 2024 Polestar 4 SUV is available at launch in two variants: Long Range Single Motor and Long Range Dual Motor.

The single-motor/rear-drive entry model is priced from $81,500 plus on-road costs, while the dual-motor/all-wheel drive flagship starts at $93,050 plus ORCs.

With first deliveries anticipated from August, the Chinese-built Polestar 4 is expected to quickly become the brand’s best-selling model, landing in one of Australia’s most popular market segments.

“From an Australian perspective this is a huge new model launch as it will compete in one of the biggest SUV categories in the country,” said Polestar Australia’s head of PR and communications, Laurissa Mirabelli, adding that the larger Polestar 3 will arrive a few months prior to bolster the brand's product portfolio.

A new competitor for the world’s best-selling passenger vehicle in 2023, the Tesla Model Y, the Polestar 4 has a sporty bent, coupe-like styling and no rear window, the latter allowing for a larger glass roof to extend past the rear occupants’ position.

As a result, the interior rear-view mirror is replaced by a fully digital display, which shows a rearward camera view.

Unlike mainstream car brands – and similar to Tesla – Polestar does not have a traditional dealership network and all vehicle orders are placed online.

Prospective buyers can also tee-up test drives via the Polestar website.

The Polestar 4 is backed by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre factory warranty while the battery is covered for eight years/160,000km, with Polestar guaranteeing it will have at least 70 per cent of its original capacity after that period.

A three-year subscription to Polestar Connect and five years’ roadside assistance is also part of the deal.

Polestar has generated a lot of interest around its upcoming range, including the forthcoming Polestar 3 family SUV also due this year, and is no longer trying to match Tesla on price, instead carving out its own position as a luxury brand.

What equipment comes with the 2024 Polestar 4?

All 2024 Polestar 4 models come equipped with a 15.4-inch central touch-screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument display.

There’s an in-built dash cam, wireless phone charger, integrated 5G e-SIM for constant internet connectivity, Google service connectivity (three-year subscription) and Android Auto with extras like Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play Store, not to mention wireless Apple CarPlay.

Headline features include a digital key, panoramic glass roof, 360-degree surround-view camera with 3D view, digital rear-view mirror, 20-inch Aero wheels, LED headlights with active high beam and over-the-air (OTA) updates for the life of the vehicle, which should keep the Google operating system fresh.

A Pro pack ($2500) brings cosmetic upgrades comprising 21-inch Pro wheels with Swedish gold valve caps and black seat belts with a gold stripe.

A Plus Pack ($8000) buys you a 14.7-inch head-up display, 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Pixel LED headlights, a 22kW charging limit (up from 11kW), power-operated steering column, easy vehicle entry/exit, upgraded front seats, power-reclining rear seats, rear climate control with air quality monitoring and entertainment screen, and two interior cloth upholstery choices.

Then there’s the Performance pack ($7200), which can only be had on dual-motor Polestar 4 SUVs that have already been upgraded with the Plus pack. It adds sports suspension, 22-inch forged alloy wheels with Pirelli P-Zero rubber (265/40R22), upgraded Brembo brakes with gold callipers and gold valve caps and seat belts.

The spec sheet also lists a ‘Nappa upgrade’ that hasn’t yet been priced for the Australian market but also requires the Plus pack and adds Nappa leather upholstery in zinc or charcoal colour schemes, ventilated front seats with massage functionality and extra speakers integrated into the head restraints.

Polestar has teamed up with automotive tech supplier Mobileye to improve the vehicle’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with a new SuperVision array of sensors fitted as standard, which includes 12 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors and one radar.

Both Polestar 4 models come with a Pilot pack (a cost option on the Polestar 2), which adds adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.

What powers the 2024 Polestar 4?

The new 2024 Polestar 4 is billed as the “fastest production car the brand has developed to date”, owing to the 400kW/686Nm dual-motor version’s 0-100km/h sprint time of just 3.8 seconds. That’s exceedingly rapid considering it weighs 2355kg.

The dual-motor Polestar 4 also leverages ‘semi-active’ suspension with Comfort and Sport settings, along with Range, Performance and Launch drive modes.

The single-motor version produces 200kW/343Nm and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 7.4sec.

Both models draw energy from a CATL-sourced 94kWh (100kWh gross) lithium-ion battery with nickel-manganese cobalt chemistry.

The Long Range Single Motor has a WLTP-verified range of 610km, while the Long Range Dual Motor claims up to 580km.

Both models have a 400-volt electrical system with 110 prismatic cells, and using a 22kW wallbox charger take a claimed 5.5 hours to charge from 0-100 per cent.

Maximum charging bandwidth is 200kW using an ultra-fast charger, at which rate the battery pack will recharge from 10-80 per cent in half an hour, according to Polestar.

The Polestar 4 comes with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, where the car can be used as a power source for appliances or camping gear, but Polestar Australia says its functionality will be “made available at a later date”.
