All-new Mercedes-Benz small electric coupe teased

Electric Mercedes-Benz CLA four-door coupe to be shown in near-production guise next to new E-Class All-Terrain

Mercedes-Benz has previewed a sleek new all-electric near-production concept for a CLA-sized four-door coupe that should slot in as the German brand’s most affordable EV.

Releasing a single picture of the unnamed concept ahead of its public debut at the Munich motor show on September 5, the new EV will take top billing on Mercedes’ show stand alongside the new-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain.

No details have been released on the entry-level electric coupe, although the car-maker says it has been created to “redefine the Mercedes-Benz entry segment” and offer its “vision for class-leading innovation, design and digital experience”.

Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX Concept

Set to preview a production model that will launch alongside the new-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA in 2025, the EV was confirmed as being in development late last year by design boss Robert Lesnik, who said it would draw inspiration from the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX prototype shown in 2022.

The styling will be toned down from the radical EQXX, but a combination of advanced design and EV tech should ensure it has strong performance, slippery aero and a long driving range.

Beneath the skin, the new compact EV coupe will be based on the same MMA architecture as the next CLA, which has been developed for both combustion and battery-electric powertrains.

From the first official teaser, the coupe looks as though it will be sleeker than the combustion-engined sedan.

The concept features an unusual thin LED strip embedded within its side flanks that stretches from the headlights, along the fender and doors to the bootlid.

It’s not known when the combustion-powered CLA will be unveiled but when it does it is tipped to line up alongside the GLA/EQA, GLB/EQB and the much-rumoured ‘baby G-Glass’ following the decision to cut costs by killing off the A-Class and B-Class in 2025.
