Toyota Australia has revealed pricing and specs for the upcoming 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross, which will bring to eight the number of SUV models in the Japanese giant’s local range from October.
The all-new compact SUV will be priced from an even $33,000 plus on-road costs, making it almost $10,000 pricier than the Corolla ($23,895-$34,695) on which it’s based and positioning it above both the Yaris Cross light SUV ($26,990-$37,990) and C-HR small SUV ($30,915-$37,165), but below the top-selling RAV4 ($34,400-$52,700).
As predicted by carsales earlier this month, the Australian Corolla Cross line-up will comprise eight individual variants spread across three different trim levels, each offering the choice of petrol or hybrid powertrains.
The range will be kicked off by the GX grade, of which there will be two variants, while the mid-range GXL (from $36,750) and flagship Atmos (from $43,550) trims will each be available in three different flavours.
The default powertrain for all three grades is the familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as seen in the Toyota Corolla hatch and sedan line-up, meaning peak power outputs of around 126kW and around 200Nm.
Opting for the front-wheel drive hybrid adds $2500 to the asking price and, if overseas specifications are anything to go by, should yield considerably more power (146kW) and torque, with the all-wheel drive version upping the ante further.
Transmission duties will be handled universally by a CVT.
The all-paw grip and extra grunt supplied by the dual-motor set-up will cost punters an extra $2000 over the corresponding front-drive variant, but exactly how much extra power remains to be seen given Toyota won’t release an official figure until the Corolla Cross’ national launch.
In terms of standard toys, GX variants will be defined by their 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and lack of fog lights.
Its base model status will be reflected inside by cloth upholstery and an 8.0-inch infotainment interface, but niceties like keyless entry and start, climate control, smartphone mirroring, a six-speaker sound system and DAB+ digital radio are all included as standard.
Safety equipment comprises the latest Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver aids including a pre-collision auto-braking system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, active cruise control with curve speed reduction, lane change assist, lane trace assist, lane departure alert, automatic high-beam, blind-spot monitoring, safe exit assist, rear cross-traffic alert and a reversing camera.
The pricier but more lavish GXL variants add higher-grade LED headlights, fog lights, rear privacy glass, roof rails, leather-accented upholstery, electrochromatic rear-view mirror, dual-zone climate control, rear USB-C ports and a bigger 10.5-inch infotainment system with satellite-navigation.
A few extra safety gismos are thrown in too, including front and rear parking support braking with rear-crossing vehicle detection and a top-view camera.
At the top of the Corolla Cross tree, the Atmos variants segregate themselves via 18-inch alloys, a panoramic moon roof, power tailgate (with kick sensor) and a heap of extra gear inside the cabin.
The flagship grade comes with everything outlined for the other trim levels but ups the opulence stakes with heated front seats, leather seat and steering wheel trim, an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, wireless phone charger, rain-sensing wipers and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Atmos hybrids go a step further with advanced park assist and a 360-degree camera with ‘see through moving view’.
According to Toyota Australia sales, marketing and franchise operations vice-president Sean Hanley, the Corolla Cross will appeal to a particularly broad customer base and its local release reflects the brand’s “commitment to offering customers the vehicle that best suits their lifestyle”.
“With ample space for a variety of customers and lifestyles, new safety and connected features and fuel-efficient powertrains, the Corolla Cross gives customers what they want out of a small SUV,” he said.
Further specification and powertrain details will be revealed closer to the all-new small SUV’s launch in October.
