The all-new 2024 Smart #1 and #3 compact SUVs have each been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating, albeit to differing standards.
While the #3 scored full points against the independent safety authority’s current (most stringent) 2023-2025 criteria, the smaller Smart #1 was tested by EuroNCAP back in 2022 against the milder 2020-2022 standards
In a statement, ANCAP said both electric SUVs are fitted with a similar array of advanced safety technologies “designed to actively avoid a collision with another vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist” and that additional testing for the #3 – including examining the performance of its cyclist anti-dooring warning and motorcycle-detecting AEB – produced ‘good’ results.
It was more of a mixed bag for the #1, which scored 70 per cent for its vulnerable road user protection but produced exceptional results in the safety assist (94 per cent) and adult occupant protection (96 per cent) categories.
Meantime, a child occupant protection score of 87 per cent is considered ‘good’, however, it did lose points in the side impact (at 60km/h) portion of testing.
The Smart #3 didn’t score as well as its stablemate in terms of adult occupant protection (90%), safety assist (86%) or child occupant protection (85%), however, it did score a higher vulnerable road user result of 84 per cent.
“These five-star results for the Smart #1 and Smart #3 will be reassuring to buyers looking to purchase a new car from this unique brand,” ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg said.
“A pair of very sound safety results.”
