Bigger, better-equipped X3... At no extra

New BMW X3 grows in dimensions, equipment but not pricing

The latest version of BMW's X3 midsize SUV has arrived, bigger and better equipped than before. Pricing for the X3 is also big news for the brand Down Under, with no change to start-up price despite extra standard features.

Available now, the all-wheel drive X3 20d and 28i come standard with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, as used by its big brother X5 (non-M model). Unlike the X1, no two-wheel drive X3 models are available.

For the first time in an X model and "unique within the competitive environment", the auto is combined with start-stop system, providing extra efficiency for the diesel 20d and upcoming (scheduled for June arrival) 30d models.

In the case of the entry 20d model, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine uses 5.6L/100km in a combined cycle -- a best-in-class result, according to BMW -- while managing output figures of 135kW/380Nm.

Also available from launch, the 28i's in-line 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine offers ratings at 9.0L/100km and 190kW/310Nm.

Expected in showrooms in June this year, the range-topping 30d also claims best-in-class performance for its 3.0-litre in-line six; rated at 190kW/560Nm and using 6L/100km. All engines in the X3 range meet Euro 5 emissions standards.

BMW's Efficient Dynamics package -- incorporating energy-saving features such as 'smart' battery charging, electric power steering, and 'on-demand control' of ancillary components -- contributes to the X3 range's competitive results.

X3 20d models ordered with (standard-fit) 17-inch wheels get lower-rolling resistance rubber. The X3 28i and 30d come with 18-inch alloys. The brand's M Sport package including 19-inch wheels is available for all X3s.

The larger wheels complement the new model's redesign. Only 18 or 19-inch shod X3 variants appeared on the launch and while the 19s go a long way to 'fill' the wheelarches of the bigger X3, we noticed a lot of road noise from the PZero tyres. Drive time in the 18-inch shod 20d we drove, however, was quiet.

We especially enjoyed the X3's handling (well-balanced in corners, little body roll) and (well-weighted) steering over a great blend of rural twists and hills around Tweed Heads. Using the eight-speeder in manual mode made the most of the 20d's energy while the 28i could be left in the auto's sports mode for responsive shift action.

This week's launch of the new X3 is "probably the most important" for BMW Australia this year, according to company execs. After making a good initial impact, the X3 has recently lagged in sales and is pipped by its larger and smaller stablemates. The first-generation X3 earned 7400 sales in Australia.

It's an important release because the new X3 is "a quantum leap [sic] from its predecessor."

In its evolution the X3 has grown. In fact it's not far short of the first-gen X5 in overall dimensions.

The new X3 has a wider track (by 92mm) and longer overall length, at 4648mm (up 83). Its overall width has also increased, by 28mm to 1881. This gives the car a more prominent stance on the road.

Now rolling on a 2810mm wheelbase (15mm over the old X3) the new X3's wheelbase is only 10mm less than the first generation X5's.

Its added size helps the X3 "grow to fit the space between the X1 and X5," a BMW spokesperson said.

The model's options list has extended, including side-view camera system, a la Range Rover Sport, for $500.

BMW's Dynamic Damper Control is also optional across the range, adding selective ride characteristics via adjustable suspension. The option isn't cheap, however, at $1900 (for the X3 20d).

In terms of standards, all models come with hill descent control while the 28i and 30d come with electric tailgate. The 30d boasts BMW's X Line trim package. See model pricing breakdown, below.
