New X3 close on price

The bigger, better BMW X3 won't be much more expensive than the previous offering

The new X3 is a bigger, better and more efficient offering than the previous version but BMW Australia says it "won’t be substantially more expensive" than the first generation model.

Representatives for the local arm of the German luxury brand couldn't confirm exact pricing at the international launch of the second-generation X3, but assured us those contemplating upgrading would not be slugged with a high premium.

Pricing will be "sharp", according to BMW Australia's Communications Manager, Piers Scott.

The new X3 will be offered with 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel and 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder petrol engine options at launch in March. The petrol engine uses BMW's 'TwinPower' turbo technology with direct injection and the brand's Valvetronic variable valve control.

A four-cylinder petrol version will be offered later, using the brand's new N20 engine that will first appear in the 1 Series hatch and updated Z4.

The X3 20d diesel option currently claims best fuel consumption rating against competitors like Audi Q5, at 5.6L/100km. Output is 135kW at 4000rpm and 300Nm torque from 1750 to 2750rpm.

The 35i model's petrol engine is rated at 225kW/400Nm and uses 8.8L/100km. It's also quick, moving the midsize SUV from standstill to 100km/h in under 6sec.

The 35i comes with the maker's eight-speed Steptronic automatic while the 20d is offered with either six-speed manual or the aforesaid eight-speed auto.

New features for the second generation X3 include electric power steering, damper control via BMW's adjustable suspension system and start/stop function for fuel savings.

BMW claims segment-leading cargo space for the new X3, at 1600 litres in total with seats folded almost flat. Buyers can also opt for an electrically-operated rear door.

The new X3 is now closer to the luxury wagon it wanted to be originally in terms of the interior, with better surface finishes and a dash/console design that resembles its bigger X5 brother's accommodation.

Rear passengers have good leg, foot and head room and BMW says elbow room has improved for all five passengers.
