Bigger BMW X3 spied

Based on the newer 3 Series platform, the next generation BMW X3 will be bigger, more efficient, and offered with more high-tech gadgets

Spy shots of the next generation BMW X3 have been snapped in Sweden undergoing cold weather testing, confirming the Munich company's intent to release the new model later in 2010.

Expected to break cover later this year, the updated X3 will grow in size as the X1 takes over its spot as BMW's entry-level compact SUV offering.

Sitting on a larger platform, borrowed from new 3 Series, the X3 will be a larger vehicle with more interior space -- one of the chief criticisms of the current models.

Slotting in between the X1 and X5, the new X3 features a less dramatic design than the current model, sans flame surfacing favoured by former BMW design chief Chris Bangle.

As the spy shots reveal, the new model will be bigger but the overall proportions of the new BMW X3 will remain intact. Design changes to the vehicle will reflect BMW's evolving design philosophy, which has been toned down under the stewardship of Adrian von Hooydonk.

Despite being fielded in the world-famous and notoriously challenging Dakar Rally in South America (albeit without official backing), the new generation BMW X3 is not expected to be pushed into a serious offroad role. It will be a four-wheel drive vehicle, but it's dynamics will be tuned primarily for road use.

Engine types will remain similar to what is already on offer, with plenty of turbodiesel offerings in both four- and six-cylinder configurations and six-cylinder petrol engines are also on the cards. A hybrid powertrain is also rumoured to be in the offing, but BMW has not commented on that, as of yet.
