BMW earns a gold star from green group
Non-profit consultancy places BMW on a pedestal for reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissionsA report from US environmental lobby group, 'Environmental Defense', has found BMW's product range has made the greatest strides in reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions over a fifteen-year period from 1990 to 2005.
The German brand's sales in the US quadrupled during that period. BMW plainly managed to achieve these results without detriment to sales.
According to 'Environmental Defense', BMW was one of 12 car manufacturers involved in the study and one of just two of those to show any sort of reduction in CO2 emissions by vehicle. The other company was Toyota.
Data shows that BMW reduced the average fuel economy across the product range by 14 per cent and reduced CO2 emissions by 12.3 per cent.
Vehicles that showed a net improvement in fuel economy were 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, Z4 M Coupe, M5 and X5. MINI models also contributed to fuel economy gains.
