BMW gives sneaky peak of iNEXT SUV concept

Latest concept claimed to preview real production car due in 2021

BMW has teased a new picture of the iNEXT concept car that it will reveal later this year.

Releasing a single arty side profile shot of what looks a little like a sporty shooting brake but is actually another SUV, BMW says the iNEXT is a pure-electric concept that will preview a real production model to go on sale in 2021.

Claimed to incorporate "major areas of innovation in a road-ready vehicle", the iNEXT will debut BMW's latest pure-electric powertrain and battery technology, as well as advanced autonomous driving aids.

It's not the first time we've seen the iNEXT. Last year BMW i released pics of its cabin and claimed that when it's launched, the pure-electric SUV will be the car-maker's most autonomous, connected and electrified BMW ever.

Set to be the same size as the firm's current X5, the iNEXT will sit on BMW's next-generation common platform that will also underpin conventional petrol and diesel cars, plus plug-in hybrids.

Built in BMW's Dingolfing plant north-west of Munich, the iNEXT is expected to mirror Tesla models by being offered with battery packs ranging from 60kWh to 120kWh.

That means the iNEXT will have a range from around 500km to 700km.

Featuring one, two- or even three electric motors, the iNEXT will be offered with numerous power outputs from just 100kW to an incredible 600kW.

Latest reports suggest that when the iNEXT launches it won't offer fully autonomous driving. Instead it will come with Level 3 capability that demands the driver monitor progress and be ready to takeover, if required.

Later on in its life BMW will introduce a fully autonomous capability.
