Like Holden, Ford, Toyota and other manufacturers this year in Sydney, BMW's latest show debuts were not 'first looks' -- though the 'sold-out' M6 soft-top will not arrive until Christmas, both the Z4 Coupe and new E92 3 Series Coupe are already in dealer showrooms.
Thus worldwide design chief Chris Bangle, in Australia for the first time, took centre stage to introduce the Bavarian brand's new models.
The controversial father of the current BMW design language, Bangle walked the crowd through the highlights of each of the cars, ever the polished performer.
From under the froth and bubble came a very committed belief to the competence of BMW's current crop of two-doors -- from a design and 'real world' point of view. Indeed, Bangle called the new hardtop Z4, the maker's most exciting car.
Bangle will host a number of design-related workshops during his whistlestop tour with a professional forum at the BMW Edge scheduled for Friday evening in Melbourne. According to the 50-year-old American he's also keen to learn what the Australia design environment can add to BMW's design future.
