BMW Panoramic Vision display revealed

Unconventional dash display just one of the major innovations to feature on next-generation BMW cars

BMW has given us our clearest look yet at the radical Panoramic Vision display that will replace the conventional instrumentation and infotainment layout in its next-generation models from 2025.

Set to star in the first of BMW’s ‘Neue Klasse’ (new class) line-up of models, the new display eschews traditional screens for a wide, narrow strip that sits on top of the dash beneath the windscreen.

Only showing critical information to the driver, the thin LED strip is supplemented by a large full-width head-up display that projects information directly onto the lower section of the windscreen.

More advanced than current technology, the HUD adapts to light conditions to make it easier to see and can also overlay augmented images to help with navigation and driver assist programs that are in operation.

BMW has also confirmed that it will launch its Android-powered operating 9.0 system with Neue Klasse models from 2025.

What’s more, the next-generation cars will include BMW’s latest battery tech with round cells that herald huge improvements when it comes to energy density.

The new batteries are said to bring a 30 per cent increase in range, while being up to 30 per cent quicker to charge.

They are also claimed to be around 50 per cent cheaper to produce, which should help BMW lower the cost of its EVs to achieve price parity (or something near it) with petrol and diesel combustion engines.

It’s been tipped that the first Neue Klasse car to be introduced in 2025 will be an all-new mid-size model that’s about the same size as the BMW 3 Series.

This will play a key role in achieving BMW’s target of EVs accounting for half the brand’s total global sales from the second half of this decade.
