BMW puts brakes on safety issue

Prestige importer recalls thousands of cars with faulty braking systems
BMW Australia has issued a recall for recently launched 1, 3 and 5 Series models, plus the X1 and X3 SUVs, and the Z4 sports car.
According to the importer the problem warranting the recall is related to reduced braking system effectiveness. The generations concerned are F20 (1 Series), F30/31/34 (3 Series), F10/11 (5 Series), E84 (X1), F25 (X3) and E89 (Z4) – all models sold across the country between 1st of November 2012 and 31st of July 2013.
"The failure of the brake booster unit is generally noticed over time as the pedal force needed for braking gradually increases [and] the brake pedal gets harder," explained Scott Croaker, Product Communications Manager at BMW Australia.
"If the unit fails completely, the driver must exert increased force on the brake pedal. The front and rear brakes of the vehicle are nevertheless fully functional, and the vehicle can be decelerated and stopped by applying increased brake pedal pressure."
