According to the latest global sales figures, BMW is still the world's number one premium car maker but Audi has stormed up the leaderboard, relegating Mercedes-Benz to the number three spot.
Audi saw a 35 per cent increase in sales in the North American market, and recorded 264,100 global car sales for the first quarter of the year, which was just 1709 units behind BMWs 265,809.
Audi has its eye on the top spot. Its goal is to be the world's number one premium marque by 2015 with a forecast of 1.5 million new car sales globally per year.
Demand for the X1 has helped BMW retain its number one spot, which has just started arriving in Australian dealerships, and is expected to be one of the marque's stronger performers in 2010.
While Mercedes-Benz has been pushed down to third spot globally in the prestige car segment, it increased sales in the important North American market by 26 per cent, overtaking Lexus to become America's most popular luxury brand, a major milestone.
