BMW is claiming the number one spot in the luxury car marketplace both Down Under and worldwide after an impressive 2005 result.

Worldwide more than 1,100,000 buyers chose BMWs acording to figures released by the maker today. Locally, the carmaker delivered 15,910 BMW four-wheelers, up from the 14,860 in 2004.

According to the maker the result was especially noteworthy given it launched a new model of its volume-selling 3 Series volume during 2005. The 3 Series family accounted for 6921 units in 2005.

BMW Motorrad, the company's two-wheeled division also posted a strong result in Australia. Just over 1500 BMW motorcycles (1502) were delivered in 2005 -- growth of 13 per cent compared to 2004.

Final sales figures for the Australian new vehicle market in 2005 are due to be published later this week. Though near-year-long speculation had the market topping the 1,000,000 unit mark for the first time, it seems likely the final count will be somewhere between 5000 and 10,000 units short.
