BMW has released a teaser image of a vehicle it will reveal at its centenary celebrations today, sparking rumours it will present a futuristic supercar concept.
The Bavarian brand doesn't refer to the shadowy teaser shot it released via Twitter ahead of its 100th birthday event, which kicks off in Germany at 3:00pm local time today (1:00am March 8 AEST) and will be attended by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"Over the course of its history, time and again, the BMW Group has proven its versatility and confirmed its role as a future-orientated, innovative company," said an accompanying statement.
"Since the company was formed 100 years ago, the BMW Group has always set its sights on the future and been a consistent, innovative force for progress.
"This is what defines the company and forms its employees' sense of identity. We live and shape change, acting in a responsible manner towards society and our environment. We overcome challenges and emerge stronger than ever."
BMW's 100-year anniversary celebration will be accompanied by the launch of a new BMW campaign titled 'The Next 100 Years', and a new public website.
While the identity of this vehicle remains unknown, the statement suggests it will be a technology leader for the BMW brand, which has a history of revealing futuristic concept cars like the M1 Homage, which was shown back in 2008 but never entered production.
To us, however, the car in the shot looks just like the front-end of the i8, suggesting BMW will finally deliver the i8 Spyder, which first previewed the ground-breaking production super-coupe in concept from in 2012.
That makes since, since the i8 super-coupe was presented more than two years ago at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show and BMW chairman Harald Krüger reportedly confirmed it for production last December.
Confusing matters, however, a BMW source told us in December there would be no new BMW i models until 2017 at the earliest, then a month later released a new special-edition of the i8 coupe, called the Protonic Red Edition.
