BMW to offer in-car web surfing

German prestige importer will provide option of Internet access via mobile phone technology

BMW will be the first to market with a new system providing users the power of Internet connectivity from their car. The new option, which BMW merely calls BMW Internet, will be priced at $200 -- or $154 for cars priced below the Luxury Car Tax -- and the company will begin taking orders next month, aiming to supply the option from later this year.

Using the new system, both front-seat occupants will be able to search the web and download emails through the car's iDrive system. BMW has configured the system to interface with the worldwide web via a web-capable Bluetooth phone. Operable via the car's iDrive controller, which effectively stands in as a desktop-computer mouse, users will be able to navigate to different websites, provided the vehicle is at standstill first.

"BMW has always been at the forefront of technological innovation and we continue that tradition by offering full in-car access to the internet," said BMW Group Australia Managing Director Stavros Yallouridis.

"For many of us, the internet is an integral part of our daily lives which is why the ultimate driving machine must fully support, and be compatible with, our information and communication needs.

"The beauty of this system is in its simplicity, utilising the driver's internet capable mobile phone."
