An ‘eye-catching’ new variant of the BMW X2 small SUV will grace showrooms from the second quarter of 2022.
The 2022 BMW X2 Edition GoldPlay brings some visual tinsel, mild chassis upgrades, added equipment and, as the name suggests, plenty of gold.
The special-edition claims to “bring new levels of style and individuality” to the X2 – much in the same way as the similarly-minded Mesh Edition of 2021.
BMW hasn’t said how many examples are destined for Australia, but has confirmed the Edition GoldPlay will be available in sDrive 20i and M35i guises.
Beginning with the visuals, ‘Galvanic Gold’ highlights adorn the alloy wheel inserts, grille surrounds and mirror caps, and there are also decals emblazoned on the X2’s sporty flanks.
It’s not just the vibrant golden hue that differentiates the X2 Edition GoldPlay, with 20-inch alloy wheels, an M Aerodynamics package, gloss-black accenting and M Mesh kidney grille inserts also standard fare.
As part of the upgrades, each X2 variant sits 10mm lower than its donor model and features M Sport steering.
Similar visual highlights appear on the inside, including ‘Edition’ sill plates with gold lettering, laser-engraved dashboard strips, gold contrast stitching and anthracite-coloured floor mats with Giallo Oro (golden yellow) edging.
The X2 Edition GoldPlay is available in five exterior colours. Two of them are new – San Remo Green Metallic and Skyscraper Grey Metallic – while the other three are carry-over: Frozen Black Metallic, Alpine White and Black Sapphire.
Both X2 Edition GoldPlay variants sport identical engine performance to their donors.
The sDrive20i comprises a 141kW/280Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder that shuffles drive to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Meanwhile the M35i employs a 224kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed torque converter transmission.
Standard equipment includes LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, powered tail-gate, head-up display, 10.25-inch centre touch-screen display and puddle light projection.
BMW says full pricing and specification details for the X2 Edition GoldPlay models will be revealed closer to their Q2 arrival.
