BMW has announced it will reveal a second version of its first people-mover – and its first front-wheel drive model – at the OutDoor Friedrichshafen outdoor and camping event in Germany next month.
Expected to present a more rugged take on the Concept Active Tourer that debuted at last year’s Paris motor show, the Concept Active Tourer Outdoor will break cover on July 12.
It’s not clear which version of the CAT will finally reach BMW showrooms, but the Bavarian brand is clearly testing the waters with a number of proposals for the model expected to be named the 1 Series GT.
Like the original CAT, the CAT Outdoor – which is again likely to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain -- rides on BMW’s new front-drive UKL1 modular compact platform, which will underpin the next-generation MINI family.
UKL will also form the basis for the next-generation 1 Series model family and the redesigned 2 Series coupe and convertible models that will follow later this decade, meaning more than half of all future BMWs sold could be front-wheel drive.
