BYD launches mighty 1MW charger
Potent new chargers capable of adding 400km of range in just five minutesBYD has announced it has begun rolling out 4000 of its next-gen 1110-volt hyperfast DC chargers, which can top up vehicles at a peak rate of 1000kW.
According to BYD, the world’s largest electrified car-maker, the new Megawatt Flash Charger supports 10C charging and will be capable of adding as much as 400km of range in just five minutes – the equivalent of 2km every second.
Claimed to be the most powerful charger commercially available in China, the new Megawatt Flash Charger overtakes the Tesla V4 (500kW), Li Auto 5C (520kW), NIO Power (640kW) and the latest XPeng S5 that can top up cars at peak rates of up to 800kW.
During a live test for the media using BYD’s most luxurious Han L EV and Tang L EV model, a seven to 50 per cent top-up was timed at an incredible 4.5 minutes.
It’s worth pointing out that the test vehicles featured BYD’s latest battery tech that includes a 1500V silicon-carbide power module.
Conventional EVs will return slower charging speeds but it’s thought next-generation EVs will cope with much higher top-up rates that, combined with 1000kW peak charging speeds, could finally see the time it takes for a top-up reach parity with the amount of time to fill a combustion car with petrol or diesel.
Despite the public test, plus the announcement it is ready to roll out as many as 4000 Megawatt Flash Chargers in the coming months, there’s no word on whether or not BYD has plans to introduce them to other markets, like Europe or Australia.
