
It's a small sedan Jim, but not as we know it.
The Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG won't quite make warp factor 5, but the only items missing from the specification list are the 'inertial dampeners'. Unfortunately, that is Star Trek technology the new C-Class variant could well use.
We first covered the C 63 AMG (replacement for the W203 series C 55) yonks ago and showed you spy pics of the wagon version just last month (more here). Now Mercedes-Benz has released official photos of the new car.
Driven by a 6.2-litre V8 developing 336kW of power and 600Nm of torque, the C 63 AMG has been timed at 4.5 seconds for the sprint to 100km/h from a standing start. All that rotational energy is fed to the rear wheels by a seven-speed automatic with paddle-shift function.
The transmission, which has been calibrated for sports-oriented driving, will 'blip' the engine on downchanges to save the driveline and flatter the driver.
As much as 500Nm of torque is available from 2000rpm through to 6250rpm, meaning the C 63 AMG is ready to perform in almost any gear.
As for other high performance models from Benz, the C 63 AMG is electronically limited to a top speed of 250km/h.
The new Benz is not all about straight-line performance. Benz had re-designed the MacPherson strut-type front suspension and the multi-link independent rear end.
AMG capitalised on this work with some further refinement for improved road-holding and handling. The front track is 35mm wider than that of the standard C-Class. At the rear, the track has been widened by 21mm and the standard geometry is set at a higher degree of negative camber.
The standard alloy wheels measure 18 inches, but 19-inch wheels are available as an option.
AMG equips the C 63 with a premium braking system and a three-stage electronic stability program ('ESP'). The ESP system can be switched off entirely, set to 'ESP SPORT' or left in 'ESP ON' mode. In 'ESP OFF' mode, there is no electronic intervention at all.
The C 63 AMG will go on sale in Germany early next year.
