C 63 enters with flourish

There was nothing understated about the local launch for the three-pointed star's new wundercar

The C 63's Australian launch formed a vital part of the four-day AMG extravaganza held at the Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst.

In addition to media, over 300 owners and prospective owners, plus around 400 Mercedes-Benz dealer staff will have attended the AMG exhibition at the circuit by the conclusion of the promotional event.

VIPs present included five-time DTM champ, Bernd Schneider -- described as Germany's equivalent to the late, great Peter Brock -- as well as current V8 Supercars stars, Ford drivers Jamie Whincup and Will Davison.

Mercedes-Benz Australia boss, Horst von Sanden, said initial response to the C 63 (more here) had surpassed even his initial expectations. Benz currently holds over 150 orders for the 336kW pocket rocket and, according to von Sanden, could sell in excess of 700 units, if the stock were available.

A company spokesman said this morning that the extra allocation of C 63 Mercedes-Benz was seeking for this market has been confirmed. That should translate to around 500 sales in 2008. This would represent a ten-fold increase on sales of the previous AMG C-Class model, the C 55 AMG.

Hot on the heels of the C 63 launch yesterday, Mercedes-Benz Australia has also announced the retail price for the C 63 wagon: $141,300. The wagon (more here) is due to go on sale in the third quarter of this year.
