BMW will reveal its next-generation gesture control technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month.
Called HoloActive Touch, the new system works by projecting a 3D image that the driver interacts with by waving and subtle hand gestures.
The new gesture system, which will have no buttons, works by using cameras in the cabin to track the movement of your hands.
The system then watches your hand interact with the floating image. If you push a virtual button, the system beeps in confirmation. Perhaps more impressive is that the system has a haptic capability that uses certain sound frequencies to provide the sensation of a "touch".
According to the car-maker, its new HoloActive Touch system is an evolution to the gesture control tech that's already offered in the current 7 Series.
BMW says the new system will not only be more intuitive but will reduce driving distraction as the hologram will be projected to around the same height as the steering wheel in the centre console.
More will be revealed when a fully functional prototype of the new system is unveiled on January 5.
