Porsche has the 911, Volkswagen has the Beetle, Fiat has the 500, Jaguar has the E-Type and MINI has the, err, MINI.
But when it comes to seminal automotive designs, not many cars come close to the 1955 Citroen DS designed by Flaminio Bertoni.
So this reimagined version of 'the Goddess' will certainly get tongues wagging.
The original Citroen DS was like a concept car when it first emerged in the mid-1950s, bristling with technology and boasting a futuristic design.
It went on to be one of the most recognisable Citroen cars of all time, rivalled only by the French brand's 2CV, and was loved for its design as much as its advanced technologies, including height-adjustable hydropneumatic suspension, power steering and even swiveling headlights.
While this proposal for a reborn Citroen DS by Sang Design doesn’t go into details about the tech underneath (it would have to be an EV, right?), the design has echoes of the classic French car that regularly makes it into the top echelons of ‘best vintage cars of all time’ awards.
The rendering retains the unique DS silhouette via a long bonnet, upright windscreen and tapering roofline and rear window, and presents other classic styling cues like the rear wheel spats (covers) that improved aerodynamics.
Modern cars like the Honda Insight have dabbled with spats, but few have made them as sexy as the French.
Sang Won Lee, the artist behind the CG renders, said he wanted a modern take on the Citroen DS because it had “Not only cutting edge technology, but also beautiful streamlined design. Between the emotionless trending EVs, I believe there is a need to bring back this legend.”
Citroen revived the DS name in the early 2010s when it launched the stand-alone prestige sub-brand, however, the French car-maker is yet to draw direct design inspiration from one of its most iconic vehicles.
The question is: should Citroen resurrect its classic DS or would a sequel harm its pristine image? Have your say in the comments below.
