Honda's SUV rejuvenation continues with the confirmation of the new third-generation MDX large SUV.
The MDX (which will be badged Acura -- Honda's Lexus-rivalling premium brand in the USA) will be shown in prototype form at the Detroit motor show in January 2013. Honda has labelled the new-generation car "a luxury sport utility vehicle".
In Australia Honda only offers one SUV, the CR-V, but is expected to bolster its stocks with two new models in the next few years. The MDX is on the cards as is the Honda Urban SUV Concept. The latter is a compact SUV based on the Honda Jazz that will also make its debut at the Detroit show.
Honda Motor Company CEO, Takanobu Ito, has previously stated that SUVs will be a key part of its plan to double sales to six million vehicles by 2017.
Says Honda, the new MDX employs "Aero Sculpture" -- a "design language affecting both form and function". In other words, Honda is looking to add some drama to its design, something it hasn't managed to do effectively in recent years.
The new SUV has a gently sloped roofline and pumped wheel arches, so expect a sporty appearance rather than the utilitarian look its predecessor adopted. The new model is also said to feature "alluring proportions with smooth, arching body lines matched to an efficient architecture," so there's a possibility we could see the model offered with hybrid technology.
The American-market Acura MDX is likely to be powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine, though the 226kW/370Nm 3.7-litre bent six from the Honda Legend could also find its way into the car.
It is understood that Honda Australia will add the new MDX to its range in 2014. It is likely to retain its predecessor's premium branding and price point.
