UPDATED: Germany’s transport minister Alexander Dobrindt has confirmed that Volkswagen cars fitted with the EA189 diesel engine with emissions rigging software were sold in Europe.
Speaking to broadcaster Sky News, Dobrindt said: "We have been informed that also in Europe, vehicles with 1.6- and 2.0-litre diesel engines are affected by the manipulations that are being talked about.”
Back in the US, according to government officials, the cars under investigation for rigging the tests actually emit up to 40 times the national standard for nitrogen oxide (NOx).
The cars affected, are 2009-2014 Jetta, Beetle, Golf, Passat and Audi A3 built from 2014-15.
In Europe Skoda and SEAT are also thought to be affected.
Lamborghini and Bentley, meanwhile, have both announced to the press confirming they are both unaffected by the scandal since neither offer diesel-powered vehicles. Bugatti has yet to issue a statement.
The revelation comes after fears that as many as 11 million cars could be affected by the scandal.
In the US, late last night, Volkswagen USA confirmed it will recall 482,000 diesels to ensure they’re fixed to meet US regulations governing NOx emissions.
