Fisker Ocean EV finally unveiled

The “world’s most sustainable vehicle” will be supercar-quick and is headed Down Under – eventually

Fisker Inc has finally taken the covers off its first production model – the all-electric Fisker Ocean luxury SUV – and it will be seriously quick.

We already know the battery-powered Fisker Ocean EV will offer a range of around 400-480km and will be available to US customers for around $US379 ($A545) per month on a subscription-style basis from late 2021, so first Australian deliveries won’t happen until at least 2022.

Fisker, which claims to be the world’s first all-digital car company, will also offer a full purchase option starting at $US37,499 ($54,275) or $US29,999 ($A43,420) minus the US federal tax credit.

But now we know even more about what the fledgling Californian car-maker is claiming will be the world’s most sustainable vehicle, which incorporates recycled plastics, bottles, T-shirts and even ocean waste.

Fisker says the Ocean will be offered in all-wheel drive configuration on all trim levels except the entry-level rear-driver, while base AWD variants will deliver power figures upwards of 225kW.

However, it also claims that an ultra-high performance version, the total power output of which won’t be announced until next year, is “targeting zero to 60mph [97km/h] in less than three seconds”, which could make it as quick as the Tesla Model S P100D and supercars like the Ferrari 812 Superfast and McLaren 720S.

The Fisker Ocean measures up at just over 4.6 metres long and 1.93 metres wide, while sitting just over 1.6 metres in height, making it a little longer but a lot wider than a Mazda CX-5. Fisker says it offers enough space for five adults to sit comfortably not matter how long the ride.

Fisker has also revealed the load-carrying capacity of its SUV, whose big 566-litre boot extends to 708 litres with the rear parcel shelf removed and a generous 1274 with the rear seats folded.

Base model Oceans will drive on 20-inch wheels, with 22s being optional. Other optional extras include roof rails and towing hooks, while Fisker says a towing capacity will be revealed in 2021 too.

Inside the cabin will be a head-up display, 16-inch central touch-screen and a 9.8-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. Fisker says the Ocean will also be full of augmented reality features, haptic touch buttons and immersive digital experiences to offer “impressive visuals all round”.

The Ocean is also one for the vegans with an interior made from polycarbonate, polyurethane and recycled nylon, wrapped by a full-length solar panel roof, recycled carpet and the promise Fisker will recycle used rubber instead of sending it away as landfill.

Full details on charging the Ocean will be revealed later this year, but Fisker says the SUV’s 80kWh battery can accept more than 200 miles (320km) of charge in 30 minutes, while a 150kW fast-charger can add 20 miles (32km) of range per minute via a Combined Charging System (CCS) Type 2 plug.

But the coolest of all features still has to be ‘California mode’ (available on all but entry-level models) – the ability to drop the roof and windows at the touch of a button to create a convertible SUV of sorts.

The US EV-maker says it will reveal yet more technical specifications and details of the Ocean at the Geneva motor show in March.
