Mazda ripped the wraps of its new compact SUV, the CX-5, at the Frankfurt motor show overnight. Though we've already seen numerous photos of the vehicle Frankfurt was its first official showing.
The car, which proved capable and well packaged when driven in prototype form in Iceland, features a new face -- one that will soon adorn other models in the Mazda line-up.
Inside, the car's packaging offers more space than its external dimensions would have you believe and the fresh decor more sophisticated and stylish than current CX-7 / CX-9.
From the get-go, CX-5 will receive the full complement of fuel-saving SKYACTIV technologies boasting Mazda's latest direct injection, turbocharged diesel and petrol mills, manual and automatic transmissions and associated systems including idle stop-start.
Both powerplants will come to Australia, though the high compression SKYACTIV-G (for gasoline) engine will be re-tuned to cope with our (lower) 91 RON unleaded petrol.
CX-5 is suspended by a MacPherson strut (front) / multi-link (rear) suspension arrangement, is fitted with four wheel disc brakes -- with the usual electronic driver aids -- and features electronically-assisted steering. Wheel choices range from 17 to 19 inches.
Full specification and pricing for local models will be advised closer to the car's 2012 arrival.
